The 457(b) and Educators

The 403(b) is a good plan. The 457(b) is a better plan. The main reasons are the ability to access money, penalty-free when separating from service (you have to wait until age 55 with a 403(b) plan) and the control it gives the employer. It’s easier for an employer to offer a single, quality, low-cost 457(b) plan.

Most employers want to offer a better 403(b) plan. Unfortunately, reforming a 403(b) can create vendor pushback and industry lobbying. Furthermore, many states have “Any Willing” vendor  provisions that prevent an employer from moving to a single, quality, low-cost vendor.

We aren’t advocating for the elimination of the 403(b). We believe all school districts should offer at least one quality, low-cost 403(b) vendor. But because of its advantages, we believe all school districts should focus on the 457(b).

a simple formula

  • One vendor.
  • One plan.
  • One message.
  • Zero sales.
